It's simply amazing how much nicer KVM integrates with Linux. No fiddling with kernel modules to compile them for your kernel version and no bloated Java-based web server for starting/stopping virtual machines. And of course, qemu/kvm offers a wide range of options to integrate with your network setup, e.g. via tap devices where you can then decide yourself to either route or bridge the traffic to your physical network connection. Sat Sep 25 22:11:39 2010 GMT: Faust @ The ENO Just been at a Faust production at the English National Opera. Mon Sep 20 19:19:54 2010 GMT: Bizarre MTU Issue Just noticed a very bizarre MTU issue with my mobile broadband connection - it appears that just certain packets (if the length is >= 1465 and <= 1469) get dropped. The ppp session negotiates a MTU of 1400 which is fine, but if you want to route some other traffic (with a MTU of 1500) over that interface you would expect path MTU discovery to sort out the MTU issue. But as MTUs of 1500 actually work, it initially appears to work quite fine (using a TCP MSS of 1460) until a packet with a length between 1465 and 1469 gets sent. As these packets get dropped the connection then just hangs. The following output of "ping -q -c 2 -s $DLEN -M do" illustrates the packet loss issue with varying packet lengths ($DLEN): PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1435(1463) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1007ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1436(1464) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1007ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1437(1465) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1012ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1438(1466) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1014ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1439(1467) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1014ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1440(1468) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1014ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1441(1469) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1014ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1442(1470) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1006ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1443(1471) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1002ms PING 188.28.191.51 (188.28.191.51) 1444(1472) bytes of data. 2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1004ms Sun Sep 19 12:21:20 2010 GMT: OpenIndiana Just tried the initial OpenIndiana build in a KVM virtual machine. While the installation itself didn't work with KVM (had to use plain QEMU for that), it runs fine now (with KVM), although I had to restrict it to a single CPU (and it appears only the rtl8139 network adapter works properly).
