Just got a cheap TP-LINK MR-3220 and noticed that some web sites just hang. My first thought was that it must have something to do with the MTU, so I did some tests with various MTUs and looking at the tcpdump.
Some web sites appear not to bother with Path MTU Discovery (i.e. blocking ICMP somewhere along the line), but just set the TCP MSS to some (lower) value like 1380. The MR-3220 router firmware has a MTU setting in the web interface which it uses for the MTU setting, but this value is also used for MSS clamping - now the problem is that MSS Clamping really means clamping, i.e. the TCP MSS value is set to the MTU value, even if that means increasing the value (a TCP MSS value of 1380 might be overwritten with 1420) which can then result in the connection hanging (because Path MTU Discovery is broken).
