Tue Jan 31 18:36:06 2006 GMT: Google Compiler

I just noticed that Google is looking for compiler engineers to work on optimizations and static code analysis. I hope they will get the overall architecture (on the static analysis part) right, which basically means to plug in some scripting language (preferably Python) into the compiler as a new back-end.

In fact, I have been thinking about doing this with the OpenWatcom compiler, but it's definitely quite a big project to get it working. On the other hand it would greatly simplify writing static analysis checks.

Mon Jan 30 19:06:53 2006 GMT: OpenWatcom 1.4

OpenWatcom 1.4 has already been released in December 2005 and now has also been mentioned on the Inquirer.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to work on the OpenWatcom C++ compiler recently, but I have been thinking a bit about how explicit specification of function template arguments can be implemented. Although it appears to be a small feature, it requires some changes to the internals of the C++ parser (in particular, symbol lookup will have to be done much earlier in the parsing process).

I have now joined the Swindon Library. In addition to books, they also offer free access (up to 2 hours per day) to some Internet PCs there.

Fri Jan 13 17:03:20 2006 GMT: New Year in London

After a short visit to Salzburg over Christmas, I decided to spend the New Year weekend in London. As expected, the area around Big Ben (particularly Westminster Bridge) was awfully crowded around midnight, so I only made it to Parliament Square where the fireworks (which reportedly cost around one million pounds) were only partially visible.

But the main attraction this weekend was London's New Year Parade which started at 12 noon on New Year's day on Parliament Square and lasted for more than three hours (with around 10000 artists from 20 countries).

And to round the weekend off I even managed to make it to the guard change ceremony at Buckingham Palace (which turned out to be quite useless). Of course, I also walked around an awfully crowded Oxford Street and to Harrods.

Sun Nov 27 14:33:04 2005 GMT: omniORB and Ice Performance Compared

Duncan Grisby has compared the performance of omniORB with Ice. Even though ZeroC claims that "Ice provides features that make it inherently faster than other middleware technologies, such as CORBA", Duncans comparison shows that omniORB beats Ice in most cases.
