Sat Mar 08 21:50:25 2003 GMT: Google's Use of ODP Data

It's no news that Google is using ODP data for its search engine and the directory. But does Google adhere to the Open Directory License with it's use of ODP data in search results? The license requires that an attribution statement must be provided "if the Open Directory in whole or in part, or any derivative work thereof, is made available via the Internet or internal network/intranet and/or information contained therein is directy accessed or linked via the Internet or internal network/intranet". Although I have seen descriptions and category information from the ODP included in Google's search results several times, I have never seen any attribution to the ODP. Of course, emails about this issue have so far been ignored by Google...

Mon Mar 03 20:10:23 2003 GMT: Testing Drupal

Over the weekend I have tried out Drupal a bit and it looks quite promising so far. Guess I will soon install it on cmeerw.org.

Sat Mar 01 17:06:05 2003 GMT: Gaim buffer overflows

Gaim 0.59.x does contain some buffer overflows when large messages containing URLs are received. I have reported the problem on the gaim-devel mailing list (not sure if they are remotely exploitable).

Sat Mar 01 17:00:59 2003 GMT: JabRSS: info command

Thanks to the previous update to JabRSS, the service seems to be quite solid now. So it's time again to add some features: I have slightly tweaked the update algorithm and added an "info" command to get information about an RSS URL.

Mon Feb 17 21:18:02 2003 GMT: Internet Communications Engine

Mark Laukien of ZeroC pointed out the release of their Internet Communications Engine (Ice). In essence, Ice is much like CORBA with the more esoteric features stripped off (but some other buzzword features like XML added). Looking at the About ZeroC page reveals that ZeroC was founded by some of the former ORBacus/Object Oriented Concepts team.
