Sat Apr 17 16:41:44 2004 GMT: ACCU Conference, Day 4

Sat Apr 17 07:19:28 2004 GMT: ACCU Conference, Day 3

Thu Apr 15 16:58:39 2004 GMT: ACCU Conference, Day 2

Highlights included Herb Sutter's excellent keynote on "Is C++ Relevant on Modern Environments" (where modern means recent Windows/.NET releases). Mark Bartosik's BoF session about lightweight marshalling using C++ templates also included some good points. Next on the schedule was Dietmar Kühl's "Manipulating Streams" talk (which was, by the way, interrupted by a fire alarm). And finally, for today, I just attended "The Boost Iterator Library: User defined iterators made easy" which probably was the most technical talk yet.

Only Francis Glassborow's presentation "The Design and Implementation of a set of Templates for Input" didn't go into as much depth as I had expected (and probably others in the audience too).

Thu Apr 15 12:06:11 2004 GMT: Free Visual C++ Toolkit

According to Herb Sutter, Microsoft will be releasing the command-line version (but not including the IDE or MFC) of its optimizing C++ compiler free of charge on Monday (April 19th) without time-limits or usage restrictions (both commercial and non-commercial use is fine).

Thu Apr 15 07:04:24 2004 GMT: ACCU Conference, Day 1

The first day's highlights were Eric Raymond's keynote about "World Domination: The First Five Years" and Dietmar Kühl's talk about "Correcting STL Problems" which provided some good insights. Jon Jagger's presentation of his Sauce project was also quite interesting, although it isn't generally available yet.

Unfotunately, in his "Platform Independent C++" talk, Johnson seemed to be more interested in explained the problems of the UK's educational system than talking about C++.

Wed Apr 14 07:49:02 2004 GMT: Travelling to Oxford

In order to attend a conference in Oxford, you have to actually get there first. So I took a Ryanair flight from Salzburg to London Stansted where I then proceeded to Oxford by bus. Fortunately I arrived in Stansted just in time for the bus to Oxford, allowing me to spend the afternoon walking around Oxford and taking some pictures (which will be published later, but probably aren't that different from my previous visit to Oxford anyway).
