Sat Jul 31 10:04:05 2004 GMT: Lycos VDS Beta

Lycos is currently running a public beta test for Virtual Dedicated Servers. Luckily, I managed to get a free beta test account yesterday. The servers seem to be physically located in Stockholm and are running a developer version of Linux VServer on a patched 2.6.8 pre-release kernel. One limitation of Linux VServer, of course, is that you can't use iptables or a VPN package like OpenVPN, cipe or OpenSWAN.

If the contents of the proc filesystem can be trusted, they use dual Pentium III @ 1266 MHz with 4 GB of RAM. Yesterday, the system feeled to be a bit sluggish, according to vmstat the system had to cope with more than 3000 context switches per second which I guess might be the cause. I am currently unable to login, but according to the Lycos VDS Beta Forums this is a common problem.

I guess there is still some hard work to be done by the Lycos VDS team to get a stable product.

Thu Jul 29 20:11:34 2004 GMT: OpenVPN 2.0-beta8

OpenVPN 2.0 beta 8 has just been released which finally adds TCP support to the multi-client server mode (previously only UDP was supported in multi-client server mode). My Debian woody package is available here.

Wed Jul 28 21:24:55 2004 GMT: jabberd2 Stability Issues

Today the Jabber server (the session manager to be more precise) at sbs.co.at stopped working and started consuming 100 % CPU. Unfortunately, a simple restart of the server didn't work this time, so I had a look at the session manager database (which uses Berkeley DB 4.2) and found about 15000 duplicate entries in the roster-groups table. After cleaning up the duplicates the server seems to be working again...

BTW, the server-to-server communication component also crashed recently, but as it isn't compiled with debug infos I wasn't able to track it down.

Tue Jul 27 20:24:13 2004 GMT: New Linksys Firmware for WRT54G

Linksys has just released an updated firmware for the WRT54G, see here. As this is once again an official firmware release, they have made the source code available for the firmware.

I think the most important improvements are a new wireless driver (supporting client isolation) and the update of the gcc toolchain to a more up-to-date version.

Tue Jul 27 20:11:26 2004 GMT: uptimes and TCP Plugins for downtime

Yes, there is now an uptimes plugin for downtime. It's up and running on edge.cmeerw.net, so you can check its uptime here.

I have also added a simple TCP plugin that only checks if a TCP connection can be established.
