Mon Dec 06 21:52:30 2004 GMT: Using NFS On Lycos VDS

Trying to use NFS on a Lycos VDS seems to be a rather bad idea. Trying to mount a remote NFS share currently isn't disallowed, but it will leave the mount process in an uninterruptible state which means that you can't (re-)start your vserver.

The root of the problem seems to be that the NFS client is part of the kernel (and is not virtualised). Therefore, NFS requests will originate from the host server's IP address (and not your virtual IP address) which in the case of Lycos VDS is some private 172.16.x.y-style address. This means that your NFS server (which is outside the Lycos VDS network) is unable to respond to these requests, and depending on the NFS client configuration the Lycos VDS host will infinitely retry the request...

The right thing to do, of course, would be to disallow NFS mounts on the Lycos VDS servers (and document it in their FAQ).

Wed Dec 01 19:57:46 2004 GMT: Internet Explorer Loosing Browser War

I just checked my Web site statistics and noticed that Microsoft's Internet Explorer seems to already be loosing the browser war. In November, my Web site got more hits from Mozilla-based browsers than from Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Sat Nov 27 23:14:09 2004 GMT: Drupal 4.5.0

I have upgraded the Drupal installation for my DevCorner to 4.5.0 and also switched to another default template.

Wed Nov 24 21:07:45 2004 GMT: Lycos VDS

Lycos Deutschland seems to have released their VDS product now that all stability issues appear to be fixed.

It's definitely an interesting product, but I don't think it's really well suited for Web hosting - the bandwidth limitation is too much of a burden for a reasonable Web site. I would rather characterise the smallest package as an advanced shell account.
