I have already updated my laptop to the Ubuntu gutsy gibbon release candidate which went very smoothly. What surprised me a bit, though, was that Ubuntu has chosen to integrate AppArmor instead of SELinux.

I used to store pictures for my digital photo album on ImageEvent, but have now decided to not renew my account there, but to move the pictures to edge.cmeerw.net. As a backup option I will use AOL Pictures - they apparently offer unlimited storage for free, so that looks like a good deal to me.

A few days ago there was a report on the PowerDNS mailing list that PowerDNS would consume huge amounts of virtual memory. It turned out that in some circumstances (db connection timeouts) PowerDNS would terminate a thread, but not detach/join it, resulting in a zombie thread. Further investigation revealed that (at least on Linux with NPTL) the whole thread stack (10 MB virtual memory) of these zombies is being kept around (although there really wouldn't be any need for this wasteful behaviour).

A BusinessWeek article spreads some interesting rumours, saying that "there's growing consensus that the company will have to sell off its wireless business" and that Alcatel-Lucent may be forced to replace Russo with Christian Reinaudo or Mike Quigley.
