Sat Nov 18 10:35:24 2006 GMT: Bush Approves Alcatel-Lucent Merger/Takeover

President Bush has now approved the Alcatel-Lucent merger/takeover, see this story @ IHT. Lucent has already issued a press release saying that the transaction is expected to complete on November 30, 2006.

According to this story @ Reuters close to 90 % of the headcount reductions will be in North America and Western Europe and Alcatel and Lucent "know precisely in every country which head will taken"...

Wed Nov 15 18:41:57 2006 GMT: Contact Form Spam (Cont'd)

My modifications to the contact page about 2 weeks ago have really helped, no more spam has been sent through the contact form. :-)

Sun Nov 12 12:21:30 2006 GMT: C++09

As noted in the State of C++ Evolution (after Portland 2006 Meeting), there is a strong desire by the C++ committee to deliver the next C++ Standard in 2009. The document also provides a good overview of what is likely to be included in the next standard.

The three biggest/most important additions are likely to be "Rvalue references" (which have already been incorporated into the latest working paper), "Concepts" and "Threads" (the latter two are still being worked on, but I think they are likely to make it into the next standard).

Sun Nov 12 12:07:35 2006 GMT: gaim and fvwm's UrgencyFunc

For the past few weeks (since I upgraded to Ubuntu edgy eft) I have been annoyed by an undesirable interaction between gaim and fvwm's default handling of the "urgency" WM_HINT. This is because fvwm raises a windows, gives it the focus and moves the mouse pointer to the top left corner of the window when the "urgency" hint is set (which is the default behaviour in Ubuntu's gaim when it receives an instant message). This is just way too intrusive and a potential security nightmare.

Of course, thanks to the extensive configurability of fvwm, the fix is trivial once you know what's causing this annoying behaviour (you just have to overwrite fvwm's UrgencyFunc with something more sensible...)

Sun Oct 29 21:01:32 2006 GMT: Contact Form Spam

As the amount of spam I am receiving through my contact form has constantly been increasing through the past few month, I have now put some simple counter-measures in place. Let's see if the spammers will adapt...
