Wed Dec 20 10:53:44 2006 GMT: Turbo C++ Explorer

Sun Dec 10 19:02:07 2006 GMT: jabberd 2.1, omniORB 4.1, OpenWatcom 1.6

In the past couple of days a new version of the jabberd2 server has been released, see ftp.xiaoka.com. This release finally includes support for epoll on Linux to improve scalability (based on my epoll patches for jabberd 2.0s11).

Also, omniORB 4.1.0 has been released which now includes support for IPv6 and Objects-by-Value, definitely another important milestone for this project (although I haven't had much chance to work with omniORB lately).

And finally, the release of OpenWatcom 1.6 is imminent. While this release (like 1.5) won't include many improvements to the C++ compiler, the C++ compiler is still being worked on.

Mon Dec 04 22:26:05 2006 GMT: HP-UX 11iv3

According to this CNET News.com story, HP-UX 11iv3 will already begin shipping this year. Unfortunately, the story is quite shallow on technical details, but I hope 11iv3 will soon make it to HP's Testdrive (hopefully on a Montecito system).

Sun Dec 03 21:23:25 2006 GMT: Inclusion in Google's index

I got an e-mail from Google the other day about inclusion of svn.cmeerw.net in their search index (because I currently block any bots with a robots.txt file as this is a Subversion repository).

Of course, the e-mail contains "helpful" information on how to allow Google (and only Google) to crawl that Web site (as I didn't know what I was doing when setting up the robots.txt file).

But even more worryingly, it also advertises their Sitemap service and lets me know on how I can remove myself from their "mailing list".

Well, this looks a lot like Spam to me, or more precisely: UCE (Unsolicited commercial e-mail). It was definitely unsolicited, it advertises their commercial services and, quite obviously :-), it was an e-mail. You could argue about the "commercial" bit, but in my opinion, any unsolicited mail that informs you how to remove yourself from their mailing list qualifies as Spam. And where would we be if all search engines start e-mailing web sites...

Fri Dec 01 18:18:08 2006 GMT: Alcatel-Lucent

Today was "Day 1" for Alcatel-Lucent and it's now also exactly one year since I came to Swindon.

Sun Nov 26 21:58:34 2006 GMT: newsfeed.cmeerw.net

I have now installed a news server on my virtual server, mainly to setup a news peering for the openwatcom.* hierarchy between news.openwatcom.org and the outside world (currently peering with news.albasani.net). There is now also some information about the openwatcom.* hierarchy on my new newsfeed page, but I guess I will be going through the process of properly establishing the openwatcom Usenet hierarchy according to the Usenet Hierarchy Administration FAQ.
