Today I have installed Solaris 10 and Sun Studio 11 inside VMware server (fortunately, all of these can be downloaded for free). I had also tried Virtual PC 2007 Release Candidate, but was a bit disappointed by it (as it was slower than VMware and messed up the graphics of the X server from Solaris). And it doesn't look like there was much development done for the product since Microsoft has bought Connectix.

This week's New Scientist has an article about the decline of Bell Labs saying "the knock-out blow came at the end of last year, when the merger of Bell Labs' parent company Lucent Technologies with French company Alcatel subsumed Bell's shrunken remains into the 'Alcatel-Lucent research community'".
Tue Jan 30 18:49:10 2007 GMT: Open Watcom Hosting Infrastructure
In the past 2-3 weeks, hosting of the Open Watcom project has been moved from a server at SciTech Software to it's own server (sponsored by Perforce). As I have been granted root access to that machine, I am helping with system administration to keep it running.
I have already been able to set up a few new Usenet peerings for the openwatcom.* hierarchy with news.albasani.net, news.skynet.be and news.isoc.lu. I have also been able to get two new download mirrors: ftp.skynet.be and ftp.heanet.ie.

I have now sent out newgroup Usenet control messages for the openwatcom.* Usenet hierarchy in order to get it more widely distributed. The control messages have already been archived in the control message archive.

I have now implemented a further improvement to my cmeerw.org e-mail setup by switching the primary MX to the 1and1.co.uk mail servers as I hope that these servers will be much more reliable than the current mail server included in my Web hosting plan. To be able to use 1and1's mail servers, I just had to register a new domain (compiler.org.uk) there for around 2.30 GBP/year. Of course, edge.cmeerw.net is still acting as a secondary MX.
