In the past they appeared to lean much more towards PostgreSQL. And in fact PostgreSQL for Solaris still says: "If you want a database that offers the assurance of a high-end SQL database on Solaris and the cost benefits of open source, PostgreSQL for Solaris is it." Sun Dec 23 22:28:48 2007 GMT: Economist's Three Fearless Predictions There are a few things worth pointing out in Economist's Three fearless predictions: the article claims that "the biggest road-hog remains spam (unsolicited e-mail), which accounts for 90% of traffic on the internet". That figure doesn't sound plausible - according to P2P growth creates battle for bandwidth e-mail only uses a few percent of the total internet traffic, while P2P eats up more than three quarters of all traffic (what the author was probably trying to say is that spam accounts for 90 % of e-mail traffic). BTW, the other point worth mentioning is: "No question, [Ubuntu] Gutsy Gibbon is the sleekest, best integrated and most user-friendly Linux distribution yet. It's now simpler to set up and configure than Windows." Sat Dec 15 12:51:00 2007 GMT: Amazon SimpleDB I am just wondering where Amazon's SimpleDB could be useful. The main problem I am seeing is the high latency to access the database in combination with it's extremly simple (i.e. limited) query language which will result in extra round-trips as you will have to move more query logic into the application. Other concerns include API overhead an their pricing model (as you can't know how expensive queries will be in advance). Sun Nov 25 21:44:27 2007 GMT: Visual C++ 2008 Express Last week Microsoft released the free Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition which now also comes with the Platform SDK, but it still doesn't include ATL (Active Template Library) or MFC. These are only included in the Standard Edition (or higher) of Visual Studio. Yet, the ATL appears to be included in Windows Server 2003 R2 Platform SDK. So far, I haven't really been able to figure out what's new in Visual C++ 2008 (in particular in terms of the C++ compiler) - appears to be kind of a closely guarded secret as the MSDN web-site isn't of much help in this regard either. Apparently, it's easier to find information on what's not yet included in the release than on what is actually new.
