Sun Sep 07 16:50:30 2014 GMT: HikingMaps Updates

HikingMaps 0.4 got approved in the Firefox Marketplace within minutes today (actually at the same time as version 0.3 I submitted yesterday). This version is now much more conservative when calculating elevation gain/loss (due to jittery GPS data) and keeps track of min/max elevation. It's also the first version that's usable out of the box with a current version (i.e. 37) of Chrome/Chromium as Chromium now finally supports storing blobs in an IndexedDB database. So there is a good chance that the app can be used on other mobile platforms in the near future.

Last weekend I walked up and around Box Hill and yesterday I did a walk around the Chilterns from Haddenham: pictures are here and here.

Sun Aug 31 13:02:28 2014 GMT: HikingMaps 0.2

Ok, so looks like someone has worked through the Firfox Marketplace app review queue today. HikingMaps 0.2 has just been approved and is now available from the Marketplace. This now includes support for exporting tracks as GPX files as one of the main new features.

Sun Aug 31 10:41:20 2014 GMT: Release early, release often

Doesn't really work that well with Firefox OS either as it takes too long (at least in my opinion) for applications to be reviewed for the Marketplace. It took almost 4 days for the initial version of HikingMaps to be reviewed and am currently waiting for version 0.2 to be reviewed (since Friday evening).

Sun Aug 31 10:38:12 2014 GMT: Cloud Storage with Firefox OS

Well, it's pretty much completely absent. The only thing I have found is the Box application which essentially is just a link to the mobile web site. Unfortunately this means that it doesn't integrate with other applications on the device.

The proper Firefox OS way appears to be to integrate via Web Activities and in my opinion Mozilla would need to take the lead on this one and provide a generic WebDAV application for that. BTW, a generic application for accessing the local file system would also be a good idea. That way application developers then wouldn't need to worry about filesystem access at all and can just use the appropriate Web Activities and get local/cloud storage support for free.
